What does a relationship mean in 2016?
When I was growing up, I heard Tina Turner sing, “What’s love gotta do with it?” MC Lyte told me that love was “paper thin.”
When I became a young adult, I heard Carl Thomas croon, “I wish I never met her.” Bell Biv DeVoe warned guys that a big butt and a smile was poison. Kelly Price, Whitney and Faith Evans shared stories about their stay at the heartbreak hotel.
In 2016 love is rarely sung about at all. And if art reflects life…and if I reflect on all the times when love wasn’t enough, I must ask myself as a single mom and entrepreneur, am I meant to be in a relationship?
Sure, after a certain amount of unsuccessful relationships everyone has asked themselves this question at least once. But let’s ponder this for a minute, has the trajectory of love changed?
The idea family has changed. The idea of gender identity has changed. The idea of what a woman’s role is in society has certainly changed, so why would love be immune?
Love is a beautiful thing, but it’s also very laborious affair Time must be invested in order to build a solid foundation. Most people I know have a career and a side hustle. Add children to the mix and one can barely find the time to breathe let alone have the time to devote to a relationship.
I am a woman who happens to love hip hop, fashion and sports while still trying to take a multi-million-dollar business to the next level. I am a mother to a son who has Type I diabetes, which can throw curveballs when least expected. I also share the challenge of co-parenting with my ex who happens to be my business partner. To some men that spells complex, but I own it.
Through the relationship I share with my ex I’ve grown as a woman. I’ve learned how to turn the failure of the past into success. I also learned how to create a family from circumstances that are unconventional. I don’t need a relationship to complete me, but as a woman who has blazed my own path, I would love to share my life and heart with someone. And a regular source for sex wouldn’t hurt either.
Love is a leap of faith that you must take openly without hesitation. As an entrepreneur I am no stranger to taking leaps of faith. I would’ve never been able to start or expand The Kenkou Group without the unshakable faith that I could succeed, and that God had my back.
When it comes to love, I believe God will have my back again as well. Despite all the evidence there may be to the contrary, I believe that love and a relationship that will fit my needs exists. Life is all about seasons. There was a season for me to begin my business. There was a season for me to become a mother. I’m confident that when it is time, a relationship will enter my life, and I vow to my future partner to enjoy all the joys and rise above all the challenges our relationship will bring.
