Afrika Brown is a writing chameleon whose first foray into professional writing began with composing documentation for wireless expense management companies. Desiring to use her gift for more than just the wireless industry, Brown created Writing Ink, Inc. and began her freelance journalist career writing fashion, lifestyle and entertainment features.
Brown has traveled the globe curating stories and has interviewed artists and celebrities such as Raphael Saadiq, Bilal, Mario, David Banner, Christian Siriano, Lennox Lewis, Michelle Williams, Deborah Cox, Daddy Yankee, Judith Jamison, and Custo Dalmau of Custo Barcelona just to name a few.
She has covered award shows, concerts and events like fashion week and exhibition openings. Along with covering the entertainment industry, Brown has worked with visual artists creating social media campaigns to showcase their work. In addition to arts and entertainment, Brown has created content for businesses in the beauty, healthcare and fitness industries.
Fueled by the stories buried deep in her spirit, Brown went back to her creative roots and published a collection of poetry titled “Sepia Sapphire” in 2006 through Author House Publishing. In 2007, Brown’s weekly chapter series “Diary of a Breakup” was featured on Universitychic.com.
In 2014, “The Outing,” Brown’s first one act play, was featured at Open Hydrant’s Urban Waves Festival, Manhattan Repertory Summer Shorts Festival, and The Strawberry Festival. In summer 2015, Brown’s new socio-political play “Strange Fruit Redux” made its world premiere at Manhattan Repertory Theatre’s 10th Anniversary Event. It returned to NYC in fall 2015 participating in the Midtown International Theatre Festival. In 2016, “Strange Fruit Redux” played festivals in North Carolina, Michigan and New York City.
Also, in 2016 Brown debuted “Slow Bullet, My Three Loves” at Manhattan Repertory Theatre. In 2017, she traveled to Barcelona to take part of a residency at Can Serrat. In 2018, a reading of Brown’s one act play “A Thing of Beauty” was performed at NYC’s Living Room Theater, and she traveled to the west coast to fulfill her commitment as an Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights Fellow.
